What a fantastic story! Julie Lessman has proven again why she is one of my top favorite authors! Dare to Love Again is a fine example of all the things I've come to love from a Julie Lessman novel.

Stellar dialogue and the playful (and not so playful) banter, shines brightly as one of my favorite elements of all of Julie's novels; this novel being no exception.

The San Francisco setting is superb, and the amount of research and detail that has went into this novel is top notch. 1903 San Francisco truly comes to life, and I was left feeling as if I had jumped into the story along with Allison, Nick, and the rest of the McClare family. From the danger of the Barbary Coast, the excitement of the cable cars and Chinatown, the smell of crab on the wharf, and the fine elegance of Nob Hill, Julie has left me longing for a trip to San Francisco, but more importantly, she's left me anxious for the third installment of The Heart of San Francisco series.

Last, but certainly not least, I must say how effortlessly the spiritual thread is woven throughout the story. The messages of God's love, forgiveness, and redemption are portrayed beautifully, and it's one of the elements that I appreciate most. Bravo, Julie!

My Review:
Masterful storyteller, Laura Frantz, has done it again! In this second installment of The Ballantyne Legacy, we witness the continuing journey of the Ballantyne family as they endure life's trials and joys.  Set among the backdrop of 1822 Pennsylvania, the story comes to life with vivid descriptions, and melodic and expressive prose that leaves me captivated at every page. 

With its rich, historical detail, and a fine cast of characters, I was drawn into another place and time.  There's so much to love about this story, it's difficult to know where to begin.  I'd have to say that while the story does start out at a relaxed pace, things certainly do pick up pace, and heat up.  With the Ballantyne and Turlock families both having a wide array of personalities amongst them, it makes for a good amount of tension and drama.  There are the characters that charm and endear you, and then others that make you cringe at their less than desirable ways.  It ends up being the perfect balance, and lends itself to a very interesting story.

In addition to tension and drama among the characters, I loved those scenes that brought a sense of danger, fear, heartache, and needless to say, . . . those moments that take your breath away and leave tears in your eyes.  There were a couple chapters where I literally found it hard to breathe -- oh, the emotion!  I was left with a pounding heart, and a feeling that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how things were going to be resolved.  Laura Frantz has a true talent for making the reader truly feel the entire gamut of emotions.  From heart-pounding tension, to sigh-worthy romance, this novel has it all . . . a literary banquet, to be sure!

I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys well written, historical fiction with rich detail, well drawn characters, and a sweet love story to win your heart.

My Review:

When Amber approached me last year to read what she had written so far on her Bleeding Heart manuscript, I jumped at the chance!  It was with great pleasure that I read the beginning of this wonderful story, and it was with great pleasure that I agreed to read and review the final copy of Bleeding Heart for Amber's blog tour!  I count it an honor and a privilege to have been a part of Amber's writing journey.

The much anticipated debut of Bleeding Heart did not leave me disappointed!  From the opening pages, to the very end, I was captivated and intrigued by the characters and the individual journey's they were on.  I love how Amber tied the theme of broken hearts throughout the novel, and I enjoyed seeing how things unfolded for each of the characters.

With a detailed setting, well-drawn characters, and elements to pull on your heartstrings, Amber has penned a fine debut!  Two of the things I loved about the writing, was that in one moment I could feel the fear and tension happening on the page, and in another moment I could feel the bittersweet tenderness playing out for the characters.  The fact that I was brought to tears at one point is a very good thing -- it's a sign of VERY good writing, in my book!

I look forward to all that Amber has in store for us in the future, and I recommend Bleeding Heart without hesitation.

My Thoughts and Review:

What a wonderful book, filled to the brim with amazing family stories! I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed and cried some more. Sophie Hudson's writing style is real and down to earth, and as you read you get the feeling that you're right there with her at the kitchen table; just chatting away and sipping lemonade. Did I mention that she's funny!? I wish I could be Sophie's real-life friend. She. Is. A. Hoot. And the best part is, she loves Jesus, and she shares her faith beautifully in this book.

As a bonus, there are Southern, family recipes at the back of the book that I can't wait to try. They all sound so good!

So, if you're a Southerner, or a Southerner at heart, like me, you'll want to read this one as soon as possible! Well go on, whaddya y'all waitin' for?

My Review:
Oh my!  Where to start?  As with all of Tamera's books that I've read, I loved To Whisper Her Name!  I truly can't say enough good things about it.  Every single aspect of the book just simply SHINES!  From the very first line, to the close of the book, I was captivated by the beautifully woven story.  

The blending of history and fiction come together perfectly, for a story that drew me in and kept my attention.  With vivid descriptions, colorful characters, and a setting that transported me back in time -- this has become one of my favorites for the keeper shelf!  And needless to say, it's left me longing for a visit to the Belle Meade Plantation; if only Tennessee weren't so far away.

We can't travel back in time physically, but through the well-written pages of To Whisper Her Name, we can certainly take a stroll and sit a spell . . . as if we were right there walking the grounds of the Belle Meade Plantation.  If you're a fan of historical fiction, you won't want to miss this one!  Like a fine dessert, it's rich and decadent . . . a literary indulgence, indeed!

When you visit Lynette Eason's website, you're met with the tagline, Infinite Suspense: Welcome . . . to the edge of your seat!  And that's exactly what you get with the Deadly Reunions series!  If you haven't read books one and two in the series, you'll definitely want to pick up When the Smoke Clears and When a Heart Stops.  Each book flows into the next, and each book is connected so they should be read in order to fully appreciate the storyline.  Each book is extremely well written, and full of action, suspense, and intrigue!  The Deadly Reunions series definitely kept me on the edge of MY seat!  Oh yes, and don't forget the romance!

If you're looking for a fast-paced ride, then you've come to the right place.  Lynette Eason's writing is fantastic, and truly keeps me guessing with all of the twists, turns, and surprises.  With the completion of each book in this series, I've been left with the same thought . . . WOW!!  That was really awesome!

Not to sound cliche, but this one was a hard one to put down.  And just like the other two books in the series, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!  I could go on, but I don't want to give anything away -- my lips are sealed!  If you haven't already, add this one to your list of MUST READS!  And be sure to have all three books on hand . . . you'll want to read them all!

My Review:
We have another winner!  I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Julie Lessman never fails to impress!  Love at Any Cost is Book 1 in The Heart of San Francisco series, and it truly does take the reader into the heart of San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th century.  All of the elements that I've come to love from a Julie Lessman novel are here, with a new cast of characters!  The McClare family comes to life atop the affluent Nob Hill, while we also get a taste of the seedy, dark side of the Barbary Coast.

As with all of Julie's novels, there's always the historical element that I love so much.  As a native Californian, who's been to San Francisco many times, I appreciate that I was able to see the city come to life in 1902, through these beautifully penned pages.  In the beginning of the book, I found myself stopping to do a bit of research, and I discovered some rich San Francisco history that I was unfamiliar with.  I'm always in awe of how well Julie weaves the historical elements into her stories, and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time.  It's always a fun history lesson!

This novel has everything I've come to love from Julie's novels -- passion, romance, witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud interactions between the characters, eye-popping twists, and the ever present thread of faith.  It's always the perfect mix, and I love how Julie effortlessly weaves key spiritual elements into the lives of her characters.  So not only are we entertained by the spunky Cassidy McClare, and the handsome Jamie MacKenna, but we see the power of what God can do in a human life.  How He can change a heart, mend relationships, and give us the desires of our heart.

With top notch writing that will keep you turning pages, you don't want to miss Love at Any Cost!  It's one for the keeper shelf, and I highly recommend picking up a copy today!

A Book Review: {Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska} by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss

My Review:

Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss have come together to create a beautiful love story, that warms the heart.  They're both talented authors, who draw the reader in, and immerse you into the small town of Glacier Bay, Alaska.  I know it may sound cliche to say, but I really did feel like I was there, and I could see everything clearly as if I was right there with Ginny, Brett, and Grandma Ethel.  And while the setting was beautiful, the characters were equally enjoyable.  I especially enjoyed Brett's Grandma Ethel.  What a sweet, precious lady; she added so much to the story, and I love how her character imparted so much spiritual wisdom to Ginny.  Truly great stuff!

I found this story to be quite unique, in the fact that there are two stories in one; Ginny's story blends beautifully with Ellie's story through Ginny's reading of the letters that were written in the early part of the 1900's.  Ginny has her own struggles, and through Ellie's letters, she's able to relate and work through some of the issues she's having, and it's wonderful to watch how she (and Ellie) grow in their faith.

I love how everything comes together, and how the authors have perfectly woven two time periods, and two love stories.  With its amazing setting, heartwarming romance, contemporary aspects, historical charm, and a well-written spiritual thread, I recommend this one with two thumbs up!  Definitely a great read!

A Book Review: {The Reunion} by Dan Walsh

My Review:
Dan Walsh is a master storyteller, and has woven a wonderful story of love, friendship, forgiveness, restoration, redemption, and second chances.

I found all of the characters to be likeable and believable, and I especially loved the main character, Aaron Miller.  His story is remarkable, and while it's fictitious, I imagine it's one that could easily hold true to real-life veterans.  I truly enjoyed everything about Aaron's character:  how he lived a humble life, how he found beauty in the world and people around him, and how every life he touched was changed for the better.  Everyone who knew Aaron was better off for knowing him.  He touched people's lives in remarkable ways . . . and yet he was humble.  In my eyes, he's a fantastic example of what it looks like to live a life that looks like Christ.  He laid himself aside for others -- back in Vietnam and in his job as a handyman in the trailer park.  His heart for others, and his humble character make him one that I'll never forget.  I'd say he's one of my favorite characters in any book I've ever read.

There wasn't anything I didn't like about the book.  And even though I had a little bit of an idea about which way the story was headed, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book.  Then of course, there was the "tear factor" . . . I love a book that moves me to tears, and Dan definitely has the skill to provide a heartwarming and emotional read.  I highly recommend this one with two thumbs up!  Dan Walsh is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading many more of his books.

My Review:
I found this memoir to be very well written, and not just a story of, "look at what happened to me."  There's a purpose here, and it's to show that there is hope.  God can take our brokenness and turn it into something beautiful.  He redeems, restores, and makes things new.  It's beautiful to read how God worked in Pattie Mallette's life, and so inspiring -- a truly remarkable story, by a truly remarkable woman.

Pattie's voice is easy to read, and it took no time at all to get through the book.  She's honest, sincere, and puts herself in a vulnerable place sharing intimate details of her life.  It was like sitting with a friend, talking over coffee.  There were times when I smiled from ear to ear, and other times when I couldn't help but shed a tear.  I also enjoyed the family photos that were included, and found myself turning to them several times as I read the book.

Pattie's story is one that needs to be heard, and I'm thankful she shared it.  Though no one's experience is ever identical, I'm sure there are many people who can relate to Pattie's life journey in some way.  It's inspiring and encouraging to think of her story having a positive impact on someone's life.

God's love, redemption, and grace are truly amazing, and Pattie Mallette's story is a perfect testimony to that.  It's a story worth reading, and I highly recommend it!

Oh, where to begin!  There's so much to love about the latest installment by Julie Lessman!  A Love Surrendered has so many beautiful facets, and I loved them all!  From the unique setting of the Ocean Pier Dancing Pavilion, the dynamic characters, the heartwarming family connections, and some of the best dialogue I've ever read . . . A Love Surrendered has all the makings of a novel that will sweep you away to another time and place!

As with all of Julie's books, the writing is top notch!  No matter where the story takes you, you can't help but be pulled into the scene, where your senses are sure to be awakened.  You'll be surrounded by the sights, sounds, and feelings of angst, humor, passion, and love . . . and it's a beautiful thing, indeed!  Like good coffee or chocolate, a Julie Lessman novel is a sweet treat to be savored!  I'm so grateful that Mrs. Lessman continues to write stories that touch the heart on so many levels! 

And rest assured this story is not one dimensional -- not only do we get to experience the burgeoning love of Annie and Steven, we get to peek into the lives of our favorite characters from past books in the O'Connor family saga.  It's all woven together perfectly, and includes the trademark Passion with a Purpose, that readers have grown to love from Julie Lessman's novels.  It's that spiritual thread that is always so well done, and never an afterthought.  Not only am I entertained, I'm able to walk away from the novel having gleaned something through the beautiful messages of faith and God's love.

Since each book builds on the previous book, you'll want to be sure to start with the Daughters of Boston series, followed by The Winds of Change series. This is definitely a series that you need to read in order to get the full effect, and I highly recommend both series!  It's Christian Historical fiction with drama, passion, and romance that you won't want to miss!

My Review:  WOW!   Talk about great suspense!  In Book 2 of the Deadly Reunions series, Lynette Eason picks up where things left off in Book 1, When the Smoke Clears.  When a Heart Stops is filled with fast-paced action and suspense!  I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen next!  Who was behind the murders?  And exactly what's in that package?

Of course, since we're talking suspense here, you can' t help but try to figure things out.  For more than half of the book, I thought I knew who was behind the murders, and continued to second guess myself.  But in the end, I was wrong.  With so many twists and turns, Eason really has your mind thinking, and trying to solve the mystery right along with the characters, which is part of what makes the book so great.  You just can't figure it out!  The pages were flying, as I raced to the end to see what would happen!  Things were tied up -- somewhat -- but there are still some unknowns and loose ends hanging there . . . waiting to be uncovered in Book 3 (which can't come soon enough!). 

I know it can be cliche to say, but this book truly has that heart-pounding suspense that keeps you turning pages way past your bedtime!  Eason's storytelling is top notch, and takes the reader to the point of really feeling the character's emotions . . . the fear, the adrenaline rush, and the heart-racing tension.  I don't like to be SUPER scared, but this book did just enough to creep me out when it was time to turn out the lights and head up the stairs to bed.

The romance and faith elements were light, yet very believable and enjoyable.  I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Christian Romantic Suspense!  This series is best read in order, and not as stand alone titles.  Be sure to pick up When the Smoke Clears first, and then be ready to jump right into When a Heart Stops -- it's a fast-paced ride you won't want to miss!

My Review:  With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin is Book One in the Wings of the Nightingale series.  The book is well written, and includes rich historical detail that really draws the reader in, and helps to immerse them into another time and place.

I enjoyed the unique storyline and plot, as well as the great character development.  Each character had their own unique voice and personality, which lent itself to some really great dialogue.  Whether the characters were facing a life or death situation or an exhilarating "sweep you off your feet" moment, you could really get a sense of being right there with them.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but at the beginning it did seem slow for things to get going.  I also found myself getting bogged down at times by the military and war descriptions in the book.  I realize it's necessary for the setting and storyline, but for me personally, I lost a bit of interest during those parts of the book. 

One of my favorite parts of the book was how everything came together towards the end -- it was creative, romantic, and fun, and definitely left me with a satisfied feeling as I turned the last page.

I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy WWII historical novels with a bit of romance, and great messages of faith, friendship, and mercy.

My Review:

I'm the mom of a 9-year-old boy, and he's the apple of my eye! There's no doubt that he holds a special place in my heart.  When I was given the opportunity to review this book, I didn't give it a second thought, and jumped at the chance.  My son and I have a great relationship, but I figured there's always room for improvement, and I could definitely benefit in gaining some insight on the "older boy" stages, since my older children are girls. 

I found this book to be very easy to read, filled with practical advice, and just the right amount of humor.  Dr. Kevin Leman provides moms with just what they need to navigate their son's life from birth to college.  Whether your son is just a baby, or heading off to college, you'll find practical advice that's presented in a clear, easy to understand way.

I appreciate the fact that there's practical advice for every stage of a boy's life, as well as general mom tips, and a chapter that's dedicated to dad and the importance of his role.

Dr. Leman stresses that our relationship with our son is very important.  The time and attention we give our sons makes a difference, and how to make the most of that time at any age.  After reading this book, I feel so encouraged to take the relationship with my son to an even higher level.  I highly recommend this book to every mom who has a son!

A Book Review: {Love's Reckoning} by Laura Frantz -- Revell Blog Tour

My Review:

Oh, how I love a Laura Frantz novel!  This is her fourth novel, and the first in The Ballantyne Legacy series, which will span over four books, and four generations; an epic family saga, indeed!  I only wish we didn't have to wait so long in between books.

Laura has a tremendous talent to craft beautiful novels, and create images in the reader's mind that truly leave a lasting impression.  From unique characters, detailed descriptions, high tension moments of uncertainty, to sweet, tender encounters  . . . I found myself savoring every word, not only for its depth, but its incredible richness.  

Love's Reckoning is not your "run-of-the-mill" novel, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself captivated from beginning to end!  And just when you think you know which direction the story is headed . . . you're in for a surprise that perhaps you weren't expecting!  That was one of the things I appreciated most about the story . . . it took me places that I never saw coming.

I love how the spiritual thread is beautifully incorporated into the story, as we see Eden "thirst" for God and His word, and see her grow in her knowledge of Him. It's endearing how she keeps His word figuratively, and literally, close to her heart.  In addition, I think it's important to note that the novel opens up with Psalm 23.  Even through the dark times and trials, Eden and Silas experience comfort, protection, and leading from the great Shepherd.  He's there with us, even in those dark valleys, and I love how Laura blends this into the story.

If you're an admirer of historical fiction, and you appreciate great literature, this is one you won't want to miss.  It will charm and enchant you, and leave you with great anticipation for the next installment!

Book Review: {Coming Home} by Karen Kingsbury

My Review:
Since the Redemption series by Karen Kingsbury is one of my favorites, I thought it would be only fitting to read the conclusion of the Baxter family saga. I originally hadn't planned on reading it, but thought I'd go ahead and give it a go.

The first nine chapters catch everyone up to speed on the lives of the Baxter family, up to the point where they are coming together to celebrate their father's 70th birthday. I appreciated the "refresher" of the previous books, and I found myself saying, "Oh yeah, I remember that. That was a really good story!" For those that haven't read the other Baxter books, I can see where this would be really helpful, so you don't feel so lost with the characters. BUT, if you haven't read the Redemption series, I highly recommend you at least read that series first, so there aren't any spoilers for you, if you do plan on reading that series. It's a GREAT series (my personal favorite of all of Karen's books!).

I didn't have any idea of what would happen in the book, but as the story progressed, things did take a turn that I wasn't really expecting. The Baxter family is faced with an unimaginable tragedy, and through it all the Baxter's faith is tested. The family takes a pretty big hit, and we get to see the family work out their faith as they question God.

Is the story completely realistic? No. Is the reader able to glean some biblical truth and insight from the story? Yes.

While I didn't love this book as much as the first books, I did like it, and thought that is was good. It held my interest, and even brought a few tears. While not Karen's best work, it's worth reading.

My Review: 
Kathi Lipp has written a book that is both inspiring and practical.  It's certainly a book that can be read from beginning to end, but it's also a great resource to keep on your shelf to pull from in times of specific need.

I completely love the idea of our prayers being grounded in scripture, so that we're always praying God's word, and there's no doubt that we're praying His will.  Our husbands need our prayers, and Kathi has laid it all out perfectly, and given chapter after chapter of sample prayers that can be used in just about every circumstance our husband may encounter.

As a wife in a spiritually unequal marriage, I greatly appreciate Chapter four that is dedicated to Praying for your husband when he doesn't know God.  To be honest, I haven't really known how to pray for my unbelieving husband, but now I feel more equipped.  Kathi doesn't have real-life experience with an unbelieving husband, so I like the fact that she asked Lynn Donovan and Dineen Miller, authors of Winning Him Without Words: 10 Keys to Thriving in Your Spiritually Mismatched Marriage, to contribute solid, resourceful information and prayers for that specific need.  And while Chapter four is dedicated to the unbelieving husband, the majority of the other prayers in the book can also apply to this type of marriage as well.

I haven't been praying for my husband like I should, and I'm so thankful that Kathi Lipp has written this fantastic book that has truly pointed me in the right direction.  With God's word to guide me, and Kathi's book pointing out the "why, how, and when," I feel equipped and motivated to pray for my husband as I've been called to do as a wife.

I highly recommend this book to all wives, and future wives!  It's a resource you'll turn to again, and again!

A Book Review: {Promise Me This} by Cathy Gohlke

My Review: This is my first novel by Cathy Gohlke, and it will not be my last!  Gohlke is an incredibly talented author, and it's easy to see why she is a two-time Christy Award winner.  The story is very well written, and I'd liken it to a multifaceted gem.  There's nothing flat about this novel, as it has many dimensions and layers to it -- family, the Titanic, World War I, a love story, and the beautiful Christian elements of faith, forgiveness, redemption, and self-sacrifice.  Every aspect of the story was skillfully woven to create a very satisfying read; one that I would definitely describe as epic.

There's so much to this story, and it's certainly not a quick read, but it's one that's very hard to put down!  I couldn't wait to see what happened next as Gohlke took me from one scene to another, effortlessly spanning many years and settings.  With fascinating historical details, realistic characters, and many twists and turns, I give this one a full five stars!

Promise Me This is a well researched and well written book that will captivate you!  I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, with beautiful messages of faith.

A Book Review: {By the Light of the Silvery Moon} by Tricia Goyer

My Rating:  5 Stars

My Review: It's not often that I actually purchase a book for "full" price, but that's how much I wanted to read this one!  Tricia Goyer has done an amazing job bringing to life all of the magnificence of the Titanic, as well as its tragic demise (which only takes up about twenty percent of the book).  Tricia has done a fantastic job weaving the real-life story of the Titanic, around the fictional story of Amelia Gladstone -- the two seem to have been effortlessly woven together.  In addition, Tricia includes an intriguing retelling of the story of the prodigal son.  With messages of God's love, hope, forgiveness, and redemption, you can't go wrong -- it all works together beautifully!  I read the book in two days, because it was so hard to put down!

The setting is vividly described, and brings to life the opulence of one of the finest ships ever built!  And despite the fact that you know the ship will sink, it doesn't take away from the intrigue and suspense of the story.  I still felt the heart-pounding tension brought on by the sinking of the ship, and the suspense of not knowing what would happen to the characters.

The characters are well drawn, likeable, and very realistic.  I came to like all of the characters, and was impressed by the solid, natural dialogue throughout the novel.  The romance is sweet, as Amelia is torn between the affections of three men.  I was never quite sure how the love story would turn out, and Tricia does a great job of keeping you guessing until the very end. 

Being familiar with the stories of the Titanic and the prodigal son doesn't detract from this story in any way.  I highly recommend it to all who enjoy solid, well-written Christian historical fiction.  Tricia Goyer is an outstanding author, with an exceptional skill for storytelling.   I look forward to reading more of her books in the future!
