Book Review: Maverick Heart by Loree Lough
About the book (from Amazon.com): Nurse Levee O'Reilly and her husband, Dr. Liam O'Reilly, are headed west to the California Territory to practice medicine when their stagecoach is tragically attacked by the infamous Frank Michaels. All alone now and grieving, Levee makes her way to Eagle Pass, Texas. The local doctor can't afford to pay a staff nurse, however, and so she turns to the only other option-teaching. Devoted wholeheartedly to her students, Levee has little time for romance. Deep down, Daniel Neville wants to be a preacher, but he's battled doubts and distrust for most of his life. Wracked with guilt over his twin sister's death and then punished; with a limp from an injury sustained during a stampede, Dan dedicates himself instead to serving his family and working with horses on their ranch. Marriage is far from the top of his to-do list, and he aims to keep it that way. When a coincidental meeting brings Levee and Dan together, they're awakened to a long ignored desire for love and acceptance by the realization that they might have finally found it. Can these two mavericks accept the plans God has for their lives?
My Rating: 5 Stars
My Review: In Maverick Heart, the second installment in the Lone Star Legends series, Loree Lough brings us back to Eagle Pass, Texas. It's 1888, and Loree invites us to join her in a "rousing Wild-West adventure," complete with bandits, rustlers, cattle drives, tornadoes, and so much more!
Loree has an excellent knack for creating characters that truly come to life. You really get the sense that you know them, and you care about them. I was left feeling like I'd want to join the Nevilles for supper, or sit a spell on the porch with some lemonade. The dialogue is so well done, and I love the wit and humor that Loree has laced throughout the book.
I appreciate the fact that Levee O'Reilly was such a strong woman, in addition to a strong woman of faith. She was faced with adversity, but no matter what situation she was in, she rose to the occasion. She's strong, capable, resourceful, and calm under pressure. She could certainly hold her own! With her perseverance, faithfulness, strong work ethic, willingness to serve others, and her dependence on God, I found her to be the type of woman that I would look up to in real life.
If you're looking for a well written, satisfying, memorable story, look no further! I enjoyed every moment that I spent immersed in the pages of Maverick Heart! There was never a dull moment, and each page brought plenty of action, adventure, and romantic tension between Dan and Levee. The story never slowed down, and definitely kept my interest from start to finish! I closed the book with a smile on my face, and an eagerness to read book three in this fantastic series! Unbridled Hope, book three, is scheduled to release on July 5, 2011.
